Why should you be interested?

  • FOBTs are illegal in Ireland – so why are they still legal in Britain?
  • The average regular FOBT gambler loses nearly £2,000 per year. We estimate that bookmakers are winning over £0.6 billion per year from addicts
  • Compared to 17 other gambling activities, FOBTS have:
      • the joint highest ratio of use by 16 to 24-year-old gamblers
      • the highest ratio of use by the lowest income quintile gamblers
      • the second highest ratio of use by unemployed gamblers
      • the third highest ratio of at-risk “high-time and high-spend” gamblers

Problem gambling does not just hurt the individual or families – it hurts society as a whole. Too many people are in prison at taxpayer expense because of problem gambling related crimes. Cash that disappears into machines is not re-circulated in local communities so harming employment and vitality in local retail, leisure, trades and services. There are now more betting shops on the high street than either chemists or newsagents. Betting shop roulette machines contribute disproportionately to this and should be banned.
